How much time do you have per question on the FE exam?

The FE exam gives you 5 hours 20 minutes for 110 questions, about 2.9 minutes (2 minutes 55 seconds) per question. One clock covers both halves. Split the time evenly and each half is 2 hours 40 minutes for about 55 questions. A wrong answer is not deducted, so a marked guess can still add a correct answer and a blank cannot.

How the per-question time is figured

Divide the full exam by the full question count and you get about 2.9 minutes each, or 2 minutes 55 seconds. Treat that as a planning rate you manage across the section, since a short concept check can finish well under it while a calculation that needs a handbook equation can run past it when earlier items in that section were quick.

Both sections run on that single allotment, so the even split of 2 hours 40 minutes per group of about 55 questions is a plan you keep yourself. Minutes you run past that mark on the first half are minutes the second half never sees. How long the FE exam is, and how many questions it has puts those totals in the context of the full exam day.

An 8-minute tutorial shows how to move between questions, flag an item for review, and open the reference handbook. Learn those controls in the tutorial so a scored question is not the first time you hunt for the flag.

What changes after you submit the first section

The exam has two sections, and the full time is placed on the clock at the start. When you reach about half the questions, you review that group, submit it, and those items close, flags included. A scheduled break is available after that submission. See what happens on FE exam day, and whether there is a break for that sequence.

If time runs out before you submit, any answers you marked are still submitted and scored, while an unmarked item is simply absent from what gets scored. NCEES counts how many answers are correct, without taking points off for misses, and converts that count to a scaled score that accounts for small differences in difficulty between exam forms. The scaled score is then set against the ability level required to pass. How the FE exam is scored covers that conversion.

How to pace a section

When a question stalls, flag it and move on. You can return to it during the review for that section while it is still open, but once you submit, that return path is gone. Staying on a stuck item until the planning rate is gone, with no setup on the page, is how the rest of the half gets squeezed.

Search the references with the search box on the left, since Ctrl + F does not work in the exam software. References are usually best viewed at 100% zoom, so leave the view there and search again rather than scrolling a magnified page. How you use the FE Reference Handbook during the exam is mostly that lookup, repeated often, on the same clock as the questions.

What types of questions are on the FE exam affects pace because the items do not all take the same kind of work. A direct choice can be a fast mark, while a numeric result can fail on units even after the equation was right. We suggest you write the units the answer must use before you calculate, and flag the item if the setup is still unclear.

Practicing with a timer

We suggest you practice at about 2 minutes 55 seconds per question, using a block of about 55 questions in 2 hours 40 minutes so the set matches an even half. That length shows a late slowdown that untimed problems hide.

Keep the handbook lookup inside the timed work, using the same search limits as the exam, so the set includes the lookup you will do on exam day. When the timer ends, leave unmarked items unscored, since marked answers are what still count if exam time expires before you submit. Review flagged and missed items after the timer is off, and use that review to abandon fewer items on the next block.

How the FE pace compares with the PE exam

On the PE exam, 8 hours for 80 questions works out to 6 minutes per question, compared with the FE average of about 2.9 minutes across 110 questions, with both halves sharing one clock. A solution paced for that longer PE item can overrun an FE item and shrink the second section.

Time FE practice sets to the FE average rather than the PE rate, since a set timed at 6 minutes per question answers a different question than whether an even FE half holds together. When you want the later exam’s layout, see the format of the PE Civil exam.

Frequently asked questions

How many minutes per question on the FE?

About 2.9 minutes, which is 2 minutes 55 seconds. That average is 5 hours 20 minutes spread across 110 questions. It is a planning rate for the whole exam. A single question can run shorter or longer while you stay inside the one clock.

Should I answer every FE question?

Mark an answer on every question you can reach. The score is the number of correct answers, and there is no deduction for a wrong answer. A blank cannot be correct. If time expires, answers you already marked are still submitted and scored.

Can I return to flagged questions?

You can return to flagged questions while that section is still open. The 8-minute tutorial shows how to flag an item for review, and you get a review of the section before you submit it. After you submit, you lose access to those questions. A flag in the first section does not bring the item into the second section.

What happens if time runs out on the FE exam?

Any answers you have marked are submitted and scored. The clock is the full exam time, so running past 2 hours 40 minutes on the first group of about 55 questions leaves less time for what remains. A wrong answer is not deducted, and a blank is not correct.

Are the two FE sections timed separately?

The whole exam time is given at the start, and the two sections share it. You still stop after about half the questions to review, submit, and take the scheduled break if you want it. An even working plan is 2 hours 40 minutes for each group of about 55 questions.
