When do FE exam results come out?

NCEES typically releases results for the computer-based FE exam 7 to 10 days after you test. You receive an email notice, and the same result is posted in your MyNCEES account. The result is pass or fail. If you fail, a diagnostic report by knowledge area is included. NCEES does not publish the passing score, because that score varies slightly with difficulty.

When you get the email

The email is the notice that a result is ready. You open MyNCEES to see pass or fail, and that account is also where to look if a filter catches the message or you are checking on your phone. For computer-based exams, NCEES gives 7 to 10 days after the exam as the typical wait. That timing is a range rather than a release at a fixed hour. A result near either end of the range is still normal.

What pass or fail includes

The report gives a pass or a fail. It does not include an overall numeric score. NCEES withholds the passing score because it varies slightly with difficulty, and it sets no quota of examinees who should pass or fail. A later attempt is judged by the same standard as a first attempt. How the FE exam is scored covers that standard. FE exam pass rates answer a separate question about other examinees, and that rate is not part of your personal result.

A passing result is the exam piece of the process. Applications for engineer intern (E.I.) certification go to your state licensing board, not to NCEES. Questions about licensure qualifications go to the board as well. Read the instructions on your board’s site and confirm them with the board before you file. EIT or EI certification shows how the exam result and the board application fit together.

How to read the diagnostic report

You receive a diagnostic report only if you fail. It shows performance in each knowledge area as a scaled score from 0 to 15, compared with the average of passing examinees. Areas close to that average were nearer the performance of people who passed. Areas well below it are the ones to study first. The report cannot be used to work out the passing score or the number of correct answers.

Treat the scaled scores as a study order. Put the bulk of your next practice on knowledge areas below the passing average, and keep a lighter review where you were already close. Free FE practice problems with full solutions are a direct way to work those topics. The diagnostic does not name individual questions, so later practice is by knowledge area.

What NCEES will not review

NCEES does not hand-verify answers on computer-based exams, and it does not give examinees their questions or their answers. A request for a rescore does not produce a manual review of individual items. The pass or fail in MyNCEES is the result NCEES reports.

Content comments use a different channel. Send any comment about exam content to NCEES within 48 hours through MyNCEES. That deadline falls while you are still waiting for results, so it applies to a content issue you noticed during the exam. It closes before a failing result can be appealed through that channel.

What to do after a pass or a fail

After a pass, file for engineer intern (E.I.) certification with your licensing board. NCEES does not accept that application and does not decide licensure qualifications. Follow your board’s page and confirm any step that is unclear. Your board’s instructions are the ones that apply to you.

After a fail, attempt limits decide when you can test again. NCEES policy allows one attempt at a given exam per testing window and no more than three attempts in any 12-month period. Some boards are stricter. Confirm your board’s rule before you schedule, and read how many times you can take the FE exam for the NCEES side. You can register for the FE exam again once both NCEES and your board allow the attempt. Until then, use the diagnostic report to choose what you practice.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to get FE results?

Computer-based FE exam results are typically available 7 to 10 days after the exam. NCEES notifies you by email and posts the result in MyNCEES. The timing is a typical range rather than a set hour, so a release at either end of that range still matches what NCEES describes.

Does NCEES tell you your FE score?

NCEES reports pass or fail and does not give you an overall score. It does not publish the passing score, because that score varies slightly with difficulty. If you fail, the diagnostic shows a scaled score from 0 to 15 in each knowledge area, compared with the average of passing examinees. Those area scores cannot be converted into the passing score or the number of correct answers.

What is on the FE diagnostic report?

The diagnostic report is included only when you fail. It lists each knowledge area with a scaled score from 0 to 15, compared with the average of passing examinees. The comparison shows where your performance was near that average and where it fell short. It cannot be used to calculate the passing score or how many answers you got right.

Can you request a rescore of the FE exam?

NCEES does not hand-verify answers on computer-based exams and does not release your questions or your answers. A rescore that rechecks individual items is not available. Comments about exam content must go to NCEES within 48 hours through MyNCEES, which is before results are posted. That comment channel does not change a failing result.
